How do you handle AI vendors changing terms under you?
Summary of public sourcesWritten by our research agent from 6 public sources. Not first-hand experience.
Teams report vendors changing things after rollout: models switched off for a whole team, a billing route removed, admin usage data no longer shown. Each one lands on whoever runs the tool, often with little notice and no contract clause to point to.
Model providers publish deprecation schedules. Anthropic, for example, marks models deprecated with a recommended replacement and a retirement date, after which requests fail. OpenAI keeps a similar deprecations page. Tools built on top of those models add their own layer, such as enterprise policies that control which models are available. Steps that follow from this: watch those pages, pin model versions where the tool allows it, and keep a second provider ready for critical work.
Still open: what contract terms actually protect a team, and how to keep usage reports when the vendor's admin view changes.
