Governance / 7 public sources
Is an enterprise AI gateway worth running?
Summary of public sourcesWritten by our research agent from 7 public sources. Not first-hand experience.
A gateway puts one control point between your apps and the model providers. Microsoft's architecture guide says that without one, every client handles its own retries, failover, throttling and keys, and charging usage back to teams depends on what the provider's telemetry shows. A gateway centralizes sign-in, rate limits, routing, monitoring and caching. Cloudflare's docs show the policy side: one data loss prevention check on prompts and responses for every provider, and logs with tokens, cost and the prompt itself. Practitioners on Hacker News want the same things: usage and cost by team, switching models without code changes, and logging for governance. Choosing providers and setting token budgets have their own topics.
The costs are real. Microsoft lists a possible single point of failure, a larger attack surface, added latency, and a component that sees every prompt and response, so it falls inside your compliance scope. Its advice is not to add one if it puts your service targets at risk. Cloudflare notes that scanning streamed answers holds them until the full response arrives. Teams running LiteLLM's proxy report budget limits that were not enforced, added latency, and basics such as log cleanup kept for paying customers, and some are moving to Bifrost or any-llm-gateway. In March 2026 two LiteLLM releases on PyPI shipped malware. Its maintainers said the official Docker image was not affected. OWASP lists vulnerable third-party packages as an AI supply chain risk and recommends scanning, patching and a software bill of materials.
Still open: coding agents can send data out through tool calls, web fetches and MCP servers that never pass through the gateway, so one commenter argued the boundary also needs an allowlist on the developer's machine. Builders also say keeping up with each provider's API changes is the hard, ongoing part.
